The Pain is Real

I wanted to do this because I have fired people, laid them off, I’ve been laid off, consulted leaders who want to lay off and consulted leaders who didn’t (want to lay off); watched leaders crush someone with a bad approach to an issue, I’ve been crushed by bad leadership and I’ve been a part of it going really well. I had a tenuous relationship with a recent leader and it got inside my soul. I was talking to my PARENTS about it for goodness sake. Yes, I’m a Gen Xer, staring down 50 and I’m blessed enough to have my Mom and Dad still sharp and still helpful. Work Defcon 1 is telling your partner about what happened, Defcon 4 is telling your parents. You get in the car after work, and call someone who is following the plot in your life and you start in. “Remember when I told you BossJane said x? Well…” Leaders…you are a character in everyone’s stage play called life. The audience of that play is everyone who cares about that person. Leaders are either the hero, the villain or an extra. I hear some of the villain stories and I think, this is wearing this employee down. If this were a personal relationship, you would advise your friend to break up, for their own health, and get out of that relationship. The body and the brain don’t know the difference. If it feels abusive at work, it probably is abusive period. This podcast will help you attack it with all the self-care and self-help you would if it WERE personal. I hope C-Suite leaders listen to this and worry they have abusive leaders on the team, are they an abusive leader, themselves? I hope others listen and take their pain inflicted at work, seriously. It can be just as traumatizing and life-changing as anything else in life. You are not overreacting and you are not alone. The Work is Personal Podcast is coming to you in Spring 2026! Reply to this post and tell me your stories, we can help you work it out on the Podcast. Stay tuned
